AIMS


This short duration combination course program is designed to immerse students in Spanish language with aspects of Spanish Culture. It is specially tailored for students that have at least High Intermediate Spanish proficiency and are interested in deepening their knowledge of Spanish Culture and professional language skills.

Spanish Language studies may be combined with:
1 History of Spain
2 Spanish Literature OR
3 Spanish Art

KEY FEATURES


· Immersion in Spanish language - 10 classes per week
· Immersion in History / Literature / Art - 12 classes per week
· Accelerated learning - average of 5 students per class
· High Intermediate to Advanced levels.

DURATION & CLASS SIZE


The course is 4 weeks long. For accelerated learning, our classes are specifically reduced to an average of 5 students per class (maximum of 10). This ensures that students have opportunity to actively participate in class and learn what is being taught at a rapid rate.

REQUIREMENTS


Students are expected to be able to express themselves clearly in everyday situations. They must have at least a High Intermediate level of Spanish. Participants must be a minimum age of 18 years old (exceptions during the summer). No other academic requirements are needed.

PLACEMENT TEST & CLASS LEVELS


Course begins with a written and oral placement test to determine the suitable class level for students. This test takes place at 9.30 am on the first Monday of the course. As soon as the testing process has been completed, the coursework takes place immediately.

SPANISH LANGUAGE + HISTORY OF SPAIN

Course core components:
10 classes per week dedicated to mastering Spanish.
12 classes per week dedicated to exploring the History of Spain.

· LANGUAGE curriculum:
This component of the course integrates the four language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. In addition to these skills, grammatical structures are emphasized to enable the student to attain communicative proficiency. As learning a language is a dynamic process, aims of this course is for total immersion in the language itself.

Curriculum is specially designed according to the different needs of each level of proficiency and duration of the course. Classwork using everyday topics with communicative teaching methods ensure that students achieve the goals of each course and progress rapidly.

Classtimes:
Each Spanish Language lesson is 55 minutes long. Classes are held from on Mondays to Fridays, from 10:00 to 2:00.

· HISTORY curriculum:
Comprehensive curriculum presents Spain in a wide range of historical contexts. Studies will trace the history of Spain from its very beginning to current affairs today. An examination of the influence of the Roman, Arabic and Hebrew civilisations is also included. Different periods of history such as the Unification of Spain during the period of the Catholic Kings; Christopher Columbus' voyage to the New World; and the history of the Hapsburg and Bourbon dynasties, is part of the curriculum.

Further examination of different aspects of Spanish culture include its customs, traditional celebrations, gastronomy, folklore, cinema, press and geography are studied.

SPANISH LANGUAGE + LITERATURE

Course core components:
10 classes per week dedicated to mastering Spanish.
12 classes per week dedicated to the study of Literature.

· LANGUAGE curriculum:
This component of the course integrates the four language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. In addition to these skills, grammatical structures are emphasized to enable the student to attain communicative proficiency. · LITERATURE curriculum:
Studies examine trends in Spanish and Latin American Literature. In addition, the genres of some of Spain's outstanding Hispanic writers are discussed. Literary topics that are examined include the Golden Age, Romanticism, Generation of 1927, the Contemporary Novel, Cervantes, Lorca, Cela, García Márquez, Isabel Allende, Borges and Carlos Fuentes.

SPANISH LANGUAGE + ART

Course core components:
10 classes per week dedicated to mastering Spanish.
12 classes per week dedicated to the study of Spanish Art.

· LANGUAGE curriculum:
This component of the course integrates the four language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. In addition to these skills, grammatical structures are emphasized to enable the student to attain communicative proficiency. As learning a language is a dynamic process, aims of this course is for total immersion in the language itself.

· ART curriculum:
A study of the History of Architecture, Spanish painting and sculpture form part of the curriculum. In addition, some of Spain's most important trends and artistic representations are discussed. An examination of various styles of Spanish Art that were directly influenced by the major civilisations such as the Roman, Moorish, Mudéjar, Renaissance and Baroque.

Furthermore the works of Spain's renowned painters including Goya, Velázquez, Picasso, Miró, Dalí are examined.

EXCURSIONS & ACTIVITIES


To ensure a comprehensive learning experience, study tours to historic cultural sites such as the Prado Museum, the Thyssen and Reina Sofía Museums, and the National Library are included. Tours are held by experienced instructors.

A monthly program of the planned cultural activities is provided. Optional weekend tours requiring overnight accommodation is not included in the course fee.

TEACHERS & TEACHING MATERIALS


Highly qualified and experienced teachers, all of them holders of a degree in teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language and additional degrees in specific areas of their teaching for example, Spanish philology, History, Art and Literature. Teaching materials are all included.

CERTIFICATE


Students completing this course successfully will be granted a diploma, which certifies the type of course, the amount of hours studied, and the achieved level of proficiency. Students will also be provided with a report card, which includes a detailed account of the student's progress according to the specific linguistic skills.

ACCOMMODATION


A wide range of accommodation options is included in the course program. Course Fees vary depending on the type of accommodation selected. For the privacy and convenience of studnets, all rooms are single occupancy.
